Will Lionel Messi Leave Barcelona For David Beckham’s Inter Miami?

David Beckham’s Inter Miami franchise are looking to make big waves in the footballing world and are reportedly interested in signing Lionel Messi in 2020, when the club is set to start it’s debut season in the MLS. This report comes courtesy of the Daily Mail and whilst it is true that Beckham’s side will look to make a marquee signing ahead of their first campaign, it is unlikely to be the Barcelona man.

For years now, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has been committed to finishing his career at the Catalan club. In fact, when signing his latest contract, which runs until the end of the 2020/21 season, the Argentine said:

"I am pleased to still be connected to the club. As I always said, this is my home.

"I always wanted to end my career here. My dream was to end my career with Barcelona and we are on track."

Although Beckham will be able to offer a then 33-year-old Messi a pleasant lifestyle in America, it is unlikely a club in its infancy will be able to match Messi’s current contract which is believed to be around £400k a week.

Messi’s young family have also grown in Barcelona and it has been his home since he was 13, making the bond between himself, the city and the Barca fans almost unbreakable.

The former England captain will want to make sure he has a solid plan in place to bring long-term success to Inter Miami. He should look to Atlanta United as an example of how to start a club from scratch and gain success in an ever-growing division.

No contact has been made between the new club and Messi and so unfortunately for MLS fans, Messi is likely to finish his career in Barcelona. That means the dream of one of the greatest players of all time finishing his career in America is just that, a dream.
