The Surprise Candidate To Replace Jose Mourinho As Manchester United Manager

The Surprise Candidate To Replace Jose Mourinho As Manchester United Manager
16:48, 29 Sep 2018

The pressure has ramped up on Jose Mourinho in the wake of Manchester United's 3-1 defeat to West Ham and it is no surprise to see  that the Portuguese manager is now the 6/5 favourite to be the first Premier League manager to leave his post this season.

The bookmakers have been swiftly pricing up the odds for his replacement and a quick look down the market reveals that the usual suspects are in the mix, although there could be an interesting outside bet for the job...

2/1 - Zinedine Zidane
6/1 - Antonio Conte
6/1 - Mauricio Pochettino
6/1 - Laurent Blanc
8/1 - Massimo Allegri
12/1 - Didier Deschamps
14/1 - Leonardo Jardim

It wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility that Mourinho could be replaced at Manchester United by his fellow Portuguese countryman, Leonardo Jardim.

The current manager of Monaco has built an impressive reputation over the years and he actually started out in management as a fresh faced 27-year-old, working his way through the divisions with the likes of Camacha, Chaves, Beira-Mar and Braga, where he won 15 league games in a row.

His work in Portugal caught the attention of Olympiakos, where he was controversially sacked after just seven months in charge despite the fact his team were leading the Greek Super League by 10 points.

Jardim soon found work with Sporting Lisbon, where his impressive work with a young team saw the Portuguese side finish second in the league, before he enjoyed great success with Monaco.

He guided Monaco to successive third place finishes in Ligue 1 before they sensationally ended the monopoly of Paris Saint-Germain by winning the title in 2016/17. A semi-final appearance in the Champions League ensured that Jardim's efforts were recognised around Europe and Monaco were again the best of the rest in France when finishing runners up to PSG last season.

Unlike Mourinho, the 44-year-old has garnered a reputation for his attacking brand of football - which could appeal to the Old Trafford hierarchy - and it would appear as if his time at Monaco could be coming to an end. The loss of various key players has had a damaging effect on the French club ,who have won just once in all competitions this season.

Like Mourinho, Jardim could be looking for a fresh start sooner rather than later.
