The Sportsman’s NFL Quarterback Power Rankings

The new NFL campaign kicks off on Friday!
11:12, 06 Sep 2022

The new NFL season is nearly upon us and we can’t wait. The off-season gave us plenty to think about so we’ve decided to do something a little different going into the new campaign and created a quarterback QB power ranking. It won’t be overly statistical, nor will you agree with all the decisions but that's all part of the fun.

READ MORE:

The rankings will be swayed by QB passer rating, touchdowns, interceptions and yardage. The reputation anyone may hold will only be an influence in the rankings prior to the first game being played, after that it’s up to the players to perform.

32. Jacoby Brissett (Cleveland Browns)

31. Geno Smith (Seattle Seahawks)

30. Marcus Mariota (Atlanta Falcons)

29. Davis Mills (Houston Texans)

28. Mitch Trubisky (Pittsburgh Steelers)

27. Trey Lance (San Francisco 49ers)

26. Daniel Jones (New England Giants)

25. Jared Goff (Detroit Lions)

24. Zach Wilson (New York Jets)

23. Trevor Lawerence (Jacksonville Jaguars)

22. Justin Fields (Chicago Bears)

21. Carson Wentz (Washington Commanders)

20. Mac Jones (New England Patriots)

19. Tua Tagovailoa (Miami Dolphins)

18. Ryan Tannehil (Tennessee Titans)

17. Matt Ryan (Indianapolis Colts)

16. Baker Mayfield (Carolina Panthers)

15. Jameis Winston (New Orlean Saints)

14. Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia Eagles)

13. Kyler Murray (Arizona Cardinals)

12. Derek Carr (Oakland Raiders)

11. Dak Prescott (Dallas Cowboys)

10. Russell Wilson (Denver Broncos)

Injury caused problems for Wilson last season but he’s fit and looking to kick on in Denver with the Broncos. A stable receiver core as well as Wilson’s own resume of being one of the best QBs in this list means he’s probably ranked too low for many. What we all want to know this year is has Russell WIlson still got it? Time will tell.

9. Kirk Cousins (Minnesota Vikings)

Pre-season performances don’t matter… yet. Underappreciated and over criticised, Cousins is one hell of a QB. Since 2019, only Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes and Wilson have thrown more touchdown passes than the Minnesota man. He’s going to be playing under a new offensive coordinator this year and it’ll be exciting to see if he can continue to push the offence forward.

8. Matthew Stafford (Los Angeles Rams)

Stafford looked strong in a dominant offence as he guided the Rams to Super Bowl LVI glory in their home stadium and some may believe he should be higher, but that’s not the case. His joint-high 17 regular-season interceptions saw him tie with Trevor Lawrence, who was a rookie last year. There’s no doubt Stafford is a very good QB but can he remain in the top 10?

7. Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens)

Explosive, shifty and one hell of a playmaker, Jackson could be one to climb up this list in the opening weeks. Injuries hampered him last year but as the new season approaches it looks like the Ravens will become a run-heavy offence again. Let's see if Lamar can silence the doubters once more.

6. Justin Herbert (Los Angeles Chargers)

One to watch. The jury is still out on Herbert but his combination of football IQ, athleticism and arm strength means he smashes the eye test.

5. Joe Burrow (Cincinnati Bengals)

From a rookie-season ACL tear to a Super Bowl runner-up while producing one of the best ever seasons for a Bengals QB, ‘Joey Brrrr’ commands a place in the top five. Heading into his third season in the league and with an improved offensive line in front of him, it’s certainly looking good for the fans in The Jungle.

4. Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs)

He’s lost Tyreek Hill but given his pedigree there’s nothing to suggest that he won’t be able to adapt quickly to life without his best receiver of the last few seasons. It’ll be tough but Mahomes has guided his side to a Super Bowl before and has an MVP title to his name. He’ll be fine.

3. Tom Brady (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

While he’s not really played in pre-season, retired and unretired in the off-season, and now has a weakened OL in front of him, Brady is still the GOAT. But he’s not THAT guy anymore.

2. Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay Packers)

The Amazonian drug, ayahuasca, helped Aaron ‘heal’ during the off-season and, despite losing two of his best defensive weapons in Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Rodgers is back-to-back MVP and rightly takes his spot at number two. .

1. Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills)

He’s not won the MVP award and he’s not won a Super Bowl but Allen is, in our somewhat expert opinion, the next big QB in the NFL. His first test this season? Aaron Donald and the LA Rams defence. Game on!
