A Premier League panel has admitted that video assistant referees have made six incorrect decisions so far in the 2022-23 season.
VAR has come under a lot of scrutiny this year for a lot of confusing decisions and it turns out a panel made up of former players and representatives of the Premier League and PGMOL have made it clear certain resolutions were wrong. The panel was introduced at the start of the campaign to conduct a weekly review of Key Match Incidents (KMI) for all top-flight matches.
Here are the six incorrect VAR overturns that they have ruled were incorrect.
Crystal Palace 3-1 Aston Villa - Digne handball leading to a penalty
With the score at 1-1 at Selhurst Park, Palace were awarded a penalty in the 55th minute for an adjudged hand ball by Villa defender Lucas Digne. The Frenchman was trying to mark Marc Guehi and the centre-back’s header struck his arm but there was nothing the player could do to get his arm out of the way as he was in the air.

Chelsea 2-1 West Ham - Maxwel Cornet’s disallowed goal
West Ham United thought they’d rescued a point against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge when Maxwel Cornet fired an effort into the roof of the net late on. The goal was ruled out for Jarrod Bowen apparently fouling goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in the build-up. The Senegal shot-stopper made a big deal out of the collision which appeared to heavily impact the decision.
Newcastle United 0-0 Crystal Palace - Tyrick Mitchell’s disallowed own goal
Newcastle thought they had found the breakthrough against Palace earlier in the season when defender Tyrick Mitchell turned the ball into his own net. After a VAR review, Joe Willock was judged to have fouled goalkeeper Vicente Guaita in the build-up, but he appeared to have been himself nudged into the Spaniard. The panel say it wasn’t a foul because Willock was pushed and couldn’t do anything to stop colliding with Guaita.
Manchester United 3-1 Arsenal - Gabriel Martinelli’s disallowed goal
Arsenal thought they had taken an early lead at Old Trafford when Gabriel Martinelli found the back of the net after a quick counter-attack from a forced turnover. However, the goal was ruled out because Gunners midfielder Martin Odegaard was adjudged to have fouled Christian Eriksen which led to the turnover. The panel believes it wasn’t a foul but some supporters are still torn on this one.
Fulham 3-0 Aston Villa - Douglas Luiz red card
During Steven Gerrard’s final game in charge of Villa, midfielder Douglas Luiz got sent off after seemingly headbutting Fulham forward Aleksandar Mitrovic. After a review the Brazilian was given his marching orders. The panel didn’t agree with the decision saying that it was the wrong call - which adds up seeing as Villa were successful in their appeal against the red card.
Nottingham Forest 2-2 Brentford - Bryan Mbeumo penalty
It is still quite hard to believe that this penalty was even given in the first place. Forest goalkeeper Dean Henderson was believed to have made contact with Brentford’s Yoane Wissa as the attacker tried to round the Englishman. A penalty was awarded after a VAR review but even when watching the replays at home you could see that no contact was made from Henderson. It didn’t come as a surprise to see this one labelled as incorrect by the panel.
