The Championship has been interrupted for the World Cup, with 26 stars from England’s second tier heading to Qatar to compete.

As we take time to assess this first period of the season, we have decided to take a look at who currently makes it into the Championship Team of the Season so far based on average match ratings posted by WhoScored.com.

Goalkeeper - Viktor Johansson (Rotherham United) 7.09

Rotherham have so far surprised everyone with how they have performed in the first chunk of the campaign. Johannson has managed to keep seven clean sheets in the Millers’ 21 game so far and he boasts an impressive save percentage of 78.8%.

Right-back - Ethan Laird (Queens Park Rangers) 6.79

The Manchester United loanee has looked sharp once again in the second tier as he has been a key figure in Michael Beale’s side. A full-back who loves to get up the pitch and get involved in the action, Laird has so far contributed one goal and two assists.

Centre-back - Anel Ahmedhodzic (Sheffield United) 7.26

The Blades’ towering Bosnian has been one of the star signings of the summer and has had such a big impact in the heart of Paul Heckingbottom’s back line. In the 15 appearances he has made he has kept seven clean sheets, while he has also contributed four goals and two assists.

Centre-back - Jordan Storey (Preston North End) 7.18

Preston have loved their clean sheets this season and Storey has been involved in keeping 11 of them in the Championship in 20 matches. He has also provided two goals for the Lilywhites this term.

Left-back - Hassane Kamara (Watford) 7.00

The Watford full-back has been a bright spark at Vicarage Road in 2022-23, often acting as the catalyst in his side’s attacks. The Ivorian has grabbed two assists so far in 18 matches and has been one of the consistent performers for the Hornets this year.

Right winger - Josh Sargent (Norwich City) 7.12

Norwich’s American forward has been a main source of goals for Dean Smith this term, having netted nine times already, the joint-highest in the division. Sargent has really stepped up to the plate this term and has been one of the most in-form players in the Championship.

Central midfielder - Ollie Norwood (Sheffield United) 7.47

The Sheffield United midfielder has been the highest-rated player on WhoScored.com so far and rightly so because he has been brilliant. Norwood has been a classy operator at this level for several years and continues to perform at a high level. The Northern Irishman has scored twice and assisted on three occasions this season.

Central midfielder - Josh Brownhill (Burnley) 7.44

Brownhill has also been one of the standout players so far as he has been excelling in Vincent Kompany’s Turf Moor revolution. He has scored five and assisted five in 20 appearances and there is certainly more to come from him when the Championship resumes.

Left winger - Ilias Chair (Queens Park Rangers) 7.17

Chair has been one of QPR’s biggest stars in recent years and he continues to thrive at this level, reportedly catching the eyes of Premier League clubs such as Aston Villa. The Moroccan has been involved in nine goals for his side this term, he is vital to how they play.

Striker - Oliver McBurnie (Sheffield United) 7.33

The Scotsman has rediscovered his form in front of goal this year. McBurnie is on par with Sargent with nine goals scored and he has certainly improved as the season has progressed under Heckingbottom. The Blades boss is certainly getting the best out of him.

Striker - Joao Pedro (Watford) 7.35

Pedro was subject to heavy interest from Newcastle United in the summer, which included bids. But he committed his future to Vicarage Road by signing a new deal and he has continued to be a star performer for the Hornets, having scored six goals and registered two assists in 14 appearances.
