The FIFA Football ‘The Best’ Awards took place in London tonight and the most eagerly awaited announcement of who won the prestigious Puskas Goal of the Year has been revealed
Not only was it bordering on the ridiculous that Noel Gallagher of all people was chosen to announce the award alongside Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, but the name read out once the envelope was awarded is incredible, with many speculating it to go the way of several other player's in the ten-man shortlist.
For it is Mohamed Salah’s goal for Liverpool in the Premier League last season against Everton that has taken the accolade.
Salah to his credit says after receiving his award that,
"I'm very happy and proud. I have to thank everyone who voted for me. I'm looking forward to another award tonight."
Undoubtedly, the award would have been more deserving of being assigned to either of Gareth Bale for his sublime bicycle kick in the Champions League, Pavard’s beauty for France in the World Cup, or even Riley McGree’s one-of-a-kind scorpion kick for Melbourne City FC.
For now, Liverpool’s Egyptian pharaoh has another trophy to put into his overloaded cabinet. Following his sensational debut season with the Reds, the 26-year-old scored the most goals of any player in a Premier League 38-game season and was duly awarded the Golden Boot alongside winning Premier League Player of the Season and PFA Fans’ Payer of the Year.
It seems like his neat turn and short curling effort against the Toffees was enough this year.
Congratulations Mo! 🎉
