The Champions League match between AEK Athens descended into chaos tonight after a Greek fan attacked the away end with what appeared to be a firework or flare.
The game in Athens, was a relatively uneventful affair on the pitch in the first half with the Dutch team dominating the ball but it was all kicking off in the strands, and not in a good way.
Footage has emerged on social media of a fan, believed to be of AEK Athens, jumping the fence onto the athletics track and walking towards the away end armed with what appears to be a firework or torch in a threatening manner.
What followed next was simply remarkable as the man in question launched the firework directly into the Ajax fans who clearly had nowhere to go in their pen. Reports have emerged of injuries to some of the travelling support from Amsterdam.
AEK Athens are going through a difficult time at the moment with poor form both domestically and in the Champions League which may have contributed to the atmosphere during the match but this was on a different level.
Ajax on the other hand are riding the crest of a wave right now with their young squad impressing all this season with the Dutch super powers on the brink of qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League.
What happened off the pitch though has no place in football and we can only hope that no one in the away end was seriously hurt thanks to one of the most brainless acts we have seen in a football ground for some time.
