Mawj has won the 1000s Guineas at Newmarket after a thrilling finish with favourite Tahiyra. Oisin Murphy battled all the way to the line with Chris Hayes as the two horses streaked clear of the rest of the pack.
Mawj looked as if she might be drifting slightly in the finish but the stewards didn’t intervene as the horse showed stunning resilience to hold off the challenge of Tahiyra. It was a stunning horse race as Saeed bin Suroor wins his third 1000 Guineas and enjoyed more success after a terrific ride from Murphy on board.
This was a first classic win for Suroor since 2009 but it was well worth the wait as he secured the big win in the sunshine. Tahiyra raced incredibly well but would have perhaps been surprised to have any competition coming into the closing stages, judging at the pace she was running at.
But Mawj went with her stride to stride to take the big win, as Saeed bin Suroor takes the win over Aidan O'Brien.
1000 Guineas results:
Mawj - 9/1
Tahiyra - 6/4
Matilda Picotte - 33/1
Caernarfon - 25/1
Dance in the grass - 200/1
She wins the Qipco 1000 Guineas for @godolphin! A second classic for @oismurphy.
