England Cricket 2023 Schedule: England Women To Play Historic 5-Day Ashes Test

Heather Knight's team will play a five-day Ashes Test in 2023

For the first time, England’s women will play a home Ashes Test against Australia over five days. Previous women’s Test matches have been played over four days, but now the length of the match has been brought in line with the men’s team.

Trent Bridge will host the match as part of the multi-format series from June 22nd to the 26th. Meanwhile the men’s Ashes series, which will feature the traditional five Tests, will take place between June 16th and July 31st.

This move, and the fact the women’s Test will be played at Trent Bridge, a place that hasn’t hosted an international women’s match since 2000, continues the progress we have seen in women’s sport in this country.

Last week they played at Lord’s for the first time since 2014 and now Heather Knight’s charges will also play three T20Is at Edgbaston, the Kia Oval and Lord's, before three ODIs in Bristol, the Ageas Bowl and Taunton.

The scoring format remains unchanged. Four points are on offer for the winner of the five-day Test match, with two points on offer for every other encounter. After the success of the women’s Hundred, the Commonwealth Games and the European Championship, more people than ever before are engaging with women’s sport.

Now, women’s cricket has taken a small step in the right direction, even though it would be nice to see the Ashes fully mirror the men’s five match Test series eventually.

Ben Stokes men’s team schedule has also been set out for the Ashes. The 2023 edition will be the first home men's Ashes series for England in history to not feature a Test in August as the format jumps forward by a month.

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) interim chief executive Clare Connor commented on the 2023 schedule.

"Next summer will be huge for England women and England men. There are few events more special in English sport than a home Ashes series and I know that Heather, Ben and their teams will be excited and driven by the challenge of regaining the Ashes.

"June and July will be very special months for cricket in this country with the buzz of two Ashes series taking place simultaneously. The women's game continues to grow and we have clearly entered another phase in terms of the demand for elite women's sport," added Connor.

"We've seen record numbers flock to stadia for the second season of The Hundred. Now we want to give more fans the chance to watch England women in person next summer as they compete for the Ashes on home soil."
