Football commentator Martin Tyler has reportedly been ‘punched’ in the head by a football supporter, according to reports from David Richardson of the Football League paper.
The voice of Sky Sports’ Premier League coverage moonlights as an assistant manager at National League side Woking FC, who were in action last night away to Wealdstone.
When the home side got what would turn out to be a late winner in the 85th minute of the game, Tyler, 72, was allegedly struck in the back of the head by a member of the local crowd.
Woking manager Alan Dowson told Richardson after the game: “He [Tyler] got punched in the back, I gather, which is not very good.”
While both management teams held talks on-field after the game, there’s been no reports yet to suggest that the person responsible has been identified or that anyone has been arrested over the incident.
The well-liked media professional, who presumably gives up his time for free to help the club he’s supported all his life, will likely be wondering if he needs the hassle of putting himself into these situations.
Football fans have theorised in the broadcaster has a soft spot for Manchester United, but in an interview with the Mirror, Tyler, once revealed that he only supports one club - Woking - by virtue of where he was born.
"This thing where you have to have a Premier League team is garbage," said Tyler. "It’s the accident of birth.
"It’s the one thing that irks me when people say you must have a Premier League team, I absolutely, categorically don’t.”
Dowson said: “He got punched in the back, I gather, which is not very good.”
