Best Ever Premier League Starts From Promoted Clubs: Here's Where Nuno Santo’s Wolves Rank

Wolves ended six years of hurt in mid-April when they booked their place back in the Premier League.

A week later Nuno Santo’s men lifted the Championship trophy, and the Midland’s club have since carried over the momentum into the new top-flight season, winning four, drawing three and losing only one of their opening eight games from August through to October’s international break.

In the process 7th-placed Wolves have accumulated an impressive tally of 15 points - including two points from games against both Manchester clubs - which is more than the likes of Man Utd, Everton and Leicester, and only three points shy of the North London duo of Arsenal and Tottenham (both on 18), whereas Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool lead the way on 20 points.

It’s been quite the start from Santo’s troops, who have won four and lost none of their last five Premier League games...but where does the club rank in the best ever starts (after eight games) from promoted clubs since the league’s inauguration in 1992/93?

Joint fifth on the all-time list is the Burnley side from 2009/10 and the West Brom outfit from the following season, with both teams registering 12 points after eight games. However, come the end of the respective campaigns, the Clarets would suffer relegation, while the Baggies finished 11th.

Fourth in the table is the Reading outfit of 2006/07 who bagged four wins and 13 points from a possible 24, with Steve Coppell’s men finishing in an extremely creditable 8th place.

A point better off in third spot on this list is Sam Allardyce’s West Ham (2012/13). The Hammers fired home 12 goals and recorded 14 points, which was just a single point short of the current Wolves side who are in second spot in this particular table.

However, leading the way at the summit of the promoted club points tallies after eight waves of Premier League fixtures is Hull City (2008/09), led by Phil Brown, who amassed a stunning five wins (also a record) and 17 points at this early stage of the season, during which the club carved out back-to-back away wins against Arsenal and Tottenham.

The Tigers would then beat West Brom 3-0, before going on a rotten run of one win from 18 league games, and in the end survived by a single point.

Should the current Wolves side win their next two games they will take their tally to 21 points after 10 matches which will be the highest total from a promoted side in Premier League history.
