A Salute To Former England Goalkeeper Paul Robinson As He Announces His Retirement

Paul Robinson has called time on a distinguished career which spanned four clubs and harvested 498 appearances, two goals and 41 England caps.

Latterly with Burnley, the 37-year-old goalkeeper has hung up his boots following a troublesome back problem.

Born in Beverley in East Yorkshire, Robinson spent time on the books at York City before joining Leeds United following a trial.

He helped them to win the FA Youth Cup before making his senior debut in a goalless draw with Chelsea in October 1998.

At the time, the Whites were emerging as a coming force in the English game but Robinson was initially forced to play second fiddle to Nigel Martyn.

He gradually become first-choice at the start of the 2002-03 season and the following campaign saw him get on the scoresheet in a League Cup tie against Swindon.

Robinson scored an injury-time equaliser with a thunderous header at the Kop end before making the decisive save in the penalty shoot-out.

It was not a good season for Leeds, however, as they were relegated from the Premier League and have not returned since.

Robinson was keen to stay at Elland Road and help the club to make a swift return, but he moved to Tottenham Hotspur and developed a strong rapport with the White Hart Lane faithful.

In March 2007, he scored in a 3-1 home win over Watford after he punted the ball downfield from the edge of his own penalty area and over opposite number Ben Foster.

Robinson said at the time: "It was a freak goal and there's nobody who knows more about those than me over the last season. People will question him now and it's part and parcel of being a goalkeeper.

"Criticism can be very difficult, very hard, depending on what level the criticism is and as a goalkeeper it's about how you react and you have to remain mentally strong.

"I didn't celebrate the goal out of respect that I have for any goalkeeper. It was fantastic to score a goal, but I can't really pretend that I meant it."

However, Robinson’s time at Tottenham was not without errors and his blunder for England against Croatia in the Euro 2008 qualifiers will live long with infamy.

He spent four seasons at Spurs, helping them to a League Cup final win over Chelsea in 2007, but was sold to Blackburn Rovers in July 2008 for a fee of £3.5million.

He proved an outstanding servant to Rovers but eventually lost his place in the side and joined bitter rivals Burnley on a free transfer in January 2016.

The former England goalkeeper spent 18 months at Turf Moor, helping Sean Dyche’s squad win promotion as Championship winners in 2016 and finish 16th in the Premier League last term.

Robinson, who retired from international football in August 2011, made three top-flight starts for the Clarets last season but a huge chapter in his life has now closed.

He said: “Unfortunately, my back problem returned towards the end of last season and has prevented me being ready for the start of the new season.

“Taking everything into consideration I've decided to announce my retirement.

“I have been very fortunate to play the game I love for so many years and make it my career.

“I intend to take a short time out to spend time with my family and explore the different options available to me.

“I would like to sincerely thank all my family and friends who have stood by me throughout my playing career.

“I have been very lucky to play for four very special football clubs and my country.”

Football, collectively, should wish Robinson well.
