5 English Players That Can Follow Jadon Sancho And Reiss Nelson And Thrive Abroad

Whatever future success that may come to Gareth Southgate’s England team may well be ultimately indebted to Germany. Jadon Sancho and Reiss Nelson’s success at Borussia Dortmund and Hoffenheim, respectively, in the Bundesliga has been well documented with the two English youngsters taking the opportunity for game-time in Deutschland in their stride.

The two 18-year-old mates have 12 goals and nine assists in 1459 minutes of action so far this season, or to put it another way contributing to a goal every 70 minutes.

Sancho has also been awarded with the Bundesliga Player of the Month for October following his scintillating performances.

The pair of players - whose ages combine to make one Phil Jagielka - have certainly put their names on the map, which they would unlikely to have done had they remained in England this season.

Which players from the Premier League elite could follow the young lads’ lead and search for opportunities to demonstrate their worth elsewhere in Germany?

Callum Hudson-Odoi (Chelsea / Contract Expiry: 2023)

Had an excellent pre-season with Chelsea with a plethora of stars still recovering from the travails of the World Cup, but the imposing forward has so far been neglected in the picking by manager Maurizio Sarri. Will have watched more keenly than most to see how well Sancho and Nelson have been doing overseas.

Angel Gomes (Manchester United / Contract Expiry: 2020)

Ask a staunch Manchester United fan which player coming through the famed academy is perhaps the most exciting name to watch out for, and nine times out of ten Angel Gomes will be the answer. Gomes has been of fixture of the England youth sides, and at his club became the youngest-ever recipient of the Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year award.

At 16-years-old he became the youngest player since Duncan Edwards to appear for United's first team, when he came off the bench late in the final-day win over Crystal Palace. Gomes was also the first person born in this Millennium to play in the Premier League.

Tashan Oakley-Boothe (Spurs / Contract Expiry: 2021)

Part of the 2017 Fifa Under-17 World Cup winning side, the central midfielder has long been hyped up by those in the know at Tottenham Hotspur. Has trained with the first team and gone on pre-season tours to the USA and became the first Spurs player to be born this century to play in the first-team when he came on as a sub for Dele Alli against Barnsley last season.

Lukas Nmecha (Manchester City / Contract Expiry: 2021)

Currently on loan at Preston North End, the Hamburg born centre-forward has made progress through the England ranks. Chances are likely to be few and far between with Manchester City’s preferred process of buying starry names, with even some of the high-profile signings facing competition to make the XI as they continue their rampage through the Premier League.

Rhian Brewster (Liverpool / Contract Expiry: 2023)

Has already been approached by Borussia Monchengladbach and was the recipient of the Under-17s World Cup Golden Boot winner in 2017. The 18-year-old was fast-tracked to the Liverpool Under-23s in the second half of the 2017/2018 season after scoring five goals and supplying four assists in 11 Under-18 Premier League outings.
