Who Are The Favourites Heading Into The PGA Championship?

Players will be heading to Oak Hill Country Club in just over a week's time
07:00, 11 May 2023

In just over a week’s time players from all over the world will gather in Pittsford, New York, for the annual PGA Championship. We were treated to some brilliant golf in this competition in 2022 as Justin Thomas defeated Will Zalatoris in a three-hole aggregate play-off to claim his second title.

There will be many players heading to Oak Hill Country Club hoping to take this year’s crown from Thomas and here is who the bookies are tipping for glory.

Jon Rahm - 7/1

It comes as no surprise to see Spain’s Jon Rahm marketed as this year’s favourite after his heroics to claim his first Green Jacket at the Masters in Augusta last month. Rahm’s best finish in the PGA Championship came back in 2018 when he placed T4.

Rory McIlroy - 9/1

Unlike Rahm, the Masters was a tournament to forget for Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman missed the cut after the opening two rounds and once again his demons got the better of him in his hunt for a Green Jacket. However, everyone knows how well he had been playing before Augusta and after a mental health break following the Masters, we might be in store for a revitalised display.

Scottie Scheffler - 9/1

American Scottie Scheffler has been a rising star on the PGA Tour over the past 18 months. He claimed the Green Jacket last year and followed that up with a second-place finish at the US Open. Scheffler’s best PGA Championship finish was T4 in 2020.

Justin Thomas - 12/1

Two-time winner Thomas was bound to feature high up the market. His experience in this tournament will go a long way and Thomas will be looking to move back into the top 10 rankings after his five-year stay came to an end earlier this year.

Dustin Johnson - 20/1

Dustin Johnson has come close to victory in the PGA Championship on two occasions, finishing second in 2019 and 2020. However, his form of late has not been indicative that he will be heading to Oak Hill as one of the strongest players.

Cameron Smith - 20/1

Australian Cameron Smith heads to Oak Hill claiming his first major title at the Open Championship last July. His best finish at the PGA Championship also came in 2022 as he placed T13. He will be eager to better that result this year as he chases a second major championship.

Jordan Spieth - 20/1

After finishing in the top four at the Masters last month, former world number one Jordan Spieth will be hoping he can claim his first major since 2017, with the PGA Championship the only one left for him to win.

Collin Morikawa - 20/1

2020 PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa knows what it takes to emerge victorious on this stage but the only problem is that he has not lifted a trophy since his Open Championship win back in 2021. In his last two tournament appearances he failed to make the cut, so his form is very rusty heading to Pittsford.

Xander Schauffele - 20/1

Xander Schauffele’s search for a major championship triumph continues as he heads to Oak Hill. His best finish in this event was 10th back in 2020. After suffering a back injury at the start of the season, it has taken time to get into rhythm. But with three top four finishes in his last three outings, he might just fancy his chances this year.

Brooks Koepka - 20/1

After finishing second at the Masters in April, Koepka will be fancying his chances for victory at Oak Hill. Koepka also won the PGA Championship in back-to-back years between 2018 and 2019, so that experience and winning mentality should serve him well in New York.
